I have been using this site for some time as a resource of information, primarily the contacts database, and realised that the reason the community part is silent is because everyone, I feel, is to scared to start.
I myself have done the same in not contributing to the community which I could learn from. Because of this I have decided to stick my neck out and answer your question. Hopefully it's useful to you.
As JP said it is a process of understanding your voice and understanding that the agents, clients or companies either make money from you or book you because of this.
I have landed a small job as a voice- over on a corporate job which I actually got paid for. A nice start, though it took me a few months to get going.
I was armed with my showreel and followed the Showreel's advice and pitched to everyone. And once I'd done it, I did it again.
I have a friend in Pr who said that the most important steps in PR after the initial contact is to contact them again, and again and again.
I did this. I sent my showreel out (after speaking to them first of course to see if they liked my voice) and then contacted them to follow-up. I did this repeatedly for everyone I had contacted. After a while when I phoned they new who I was and what I was after.
This company said they were doing a job and asked if I wanted to come down for an audition, which I did and what do you know I got a job.
Bloody hell I was impressed. I thought nothing would work but it's true. Persistence pays off.
I am now contacting all the corporate companies with a new batch of cd's knowing that I can get work.
I hope this helps and I hope other users of the site contribute as well because I know your all out there with maybe the same issues I just went through.
Cherry.
